Jackie and her partner Steve live together at their home in North Yorkshire, but occasionally, Jackie will move into the respite apartment at a nearby Extra Care scheme.
Jackie is living with dementia and although still independent, receives support from Steve. As she no longer drives, she spends more time in the house, often feeling anxious when she is left alone and contacting Steve for reassurance.
More recently, she has taken short breaks by moving into the Extra Care respite apartment, which is managed by Housing 21. During her stays, Jackie receives the same welcome and support as permanent residents, with access to the communal facilities and support from the on-site Care team who have got to know her personally.
“It takes the pressure off,” said Jackie.
“I don’t have to worry about important things slipping my mind because the team know my schedule.”
Prior to retiring, Jackie worked at the Citizens Advice Bureau, where she supported people in a customer-facing role. She said she often misses interaction with people, particularly now she is unable to drive and relishes the social opportunities that staying in Extra Care provides. Quite often, she will socialise with other residents in the scheme’s communal lounge and restaurant, which have become the settings for new friendships.
“I already can’t drive but I don’t want to be a shut in,” she said.
“Being here with things to do and people to talk to is helping keep my mind alert.”
Steve has also noticed the benefits and the progress that Jackie has made with each stay. Initially, on her first break, he visited her several times everyday to help reassure her. However over time, Jackie’s confidence has increased and now he visits just a few times a week.
He said: “The respite apartment gives me the opportunity to do things that are needed at home, or visit people or do activities that I wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to do.”
Jackie and Steve are now hoping to be able to move into the scheme permanently, where they can continue living together with the on-site support. Jackie hopes by moving into Extra Care, it means she will not have to stay in hospitals or care homes in the future.
She said: “I want to live my own life, and I want it to be better for Steve. Being here has helped me keep my independence and it has helped give my partner relief. It would be great to live here.”
