Mayor of Kendal, Cllr Doug Rathbone marked the opening of the £15.2m Extra Care scheme in the form of a ribbon-cutting ceremony, joined by Housing 21 employees and Ian Reynolds, Project Manager at EQUANS.

Designed to promote independent living for over 55s, Castlestead View comprises 80 one- and two-bedroom apartments for rent and shared ownership and 24 bungalows for outright sale. On-site care will be available for residents if and when they need it too.

The scheme has been delivered by Housing 21, a national leading provider of Retirement Living and Extra Care, in partnership with Cumbria County Council, Homes England and EQUANS.

Deborah Hope, Head of Development, at Housing 21, said: “We are delighted that EQUANS have successfully completed the construction of Castlestead View. It will provide much-needed, affordable accommodation, with care when required, for the locals in Oxenholme. We can’t wait to start welcoming residents and inviting the local community to enjoy our facilities.”

Jamie Lindon-Lewis, Head of Quality Assurance and Commissioning at Housing 21, said: “We take pride in ensuring all apartments and bungalows have been designed to the highest quality to provide fully accessible facilities for residents, including quality fitted kitchens, level access showers and specialist flooring to reduce slip hazards.

“Our Extra Care schemes, including Castlestead View, offers the independence, privacy and security of your own home, along with the peace of mind that there is 24/7 support from our on-site care team as needed – all within a welcoming community atmosphere.”

As well as their own spacious living space, residents will also be able to enjoy an impressive range of on-site communal facilities, including a residents’ lounge, activity room and landscaped gardens. The on-site café/bistro and hair salon will also be available for residents, visitors and members of the local community.

Will Kay, Regional Managing Director at EQUANS, said: “We are delighted to be handing over Castlestead View to Housing 21 in time to welcome residents who will be able to maintain their independence whilst still receiving support and care as needed. I feel sure that the development, which has a wonderful community feel, with modern bungalows surrounding the apartment block, will be very much appreciated by all those who benefit from it.

“I want to pass on my own thanks to the whole team who worked tirelessly to deliver what is an exceptional development, which perfectly complements the surrounding area and provides a facility that will do much to support the local area in all its aspects.’’

The on-site Housing and Care Manager will be available to assist with any concerns or queries, including repairs, benefit claims or suggestions for events. The manager is supported by a team of Care Workers who are based on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to assist with any planned or emergency care needs.
