To recognise the apprenticeships that Housing 21 offers, we spoke to our Employment Paralegal Apprentice, Holly to find out more about her journey to this learning pathway and her future career aspirations.

What’s your journey before your apprenticeship?

Throughout my time in secondary school and sixth form I was always keen to study law, but I never had the option. After choosing to go to university, it felt daunting to choose a subject I had never had any experience in, so I chose to focus on my interests and strengths, which was an English degree.

Throughout my studies, I read a wide range of texts and always found myself most interested in those that dealt with the law and its complications (The Trial by Franz Kafka being one of my favourites!). I found myself researching more about the legal system and legislation and how I could use my understanding of the law to help others.

I found that the skills required in a legal career overlapped with skills I had gained through education: reading, analysing, explaining, drafting and having a keen eye for detail. So, I followed my interests and skills and applied for the apprenticeship at Housing 21.

Why did you choose the apprenticeship route?

I chose the apprenticeship route because it’s the best of both worlds; you get the essential education and the experience to apply it.

How does working and studying in your apprenticeship work?

I’m given 20 percent off-the-job learning, which means one day a week I can focus solely on my studies. The apprenticeship covers Public, Contract, Tort and Land Law as well as including an optional module of my choosing. I also learn professional practice skills in professionalism and ethics, administration, business awareness and legal context and research to help me develop in my career. In my role I can apply what I learn in my studies every day and put my skills into practise.

Did you have concerns about doing an apprenticeship later in life?

Initially, I was concerned I was too old for an apprenticeship and because I had attended university, this meant apprenticeships were no longer an option for me. However, Housing 21 welcomes all ages and backgrounds, they have shown me that you can do an apprenticeship at any age!

What’s your experience working at Housing 21?

Having been at Housing 21 for nearly six months, I am having a great experience. Working in a professional setting for the first time can be nerve-wracking but everyone is always happy to help and want the best for your career. So far, I’ve had the opportunity to network with other apprentices and employment lawyers at various events, which is essential for my future.

What are you career aspirations after you finish your apprenticeship?

My plan for the future is to continue to work and gain experience with Housing 21 and enjoy the benefits that come with it. After I have qualified as a paralegal, I hope to continue my studies to become a Solicitor and advise more organisations, employers and employees on the law.
