Marigold Court in Gateshead has taken a bold step towards sustainability. The Extra Care scheme has officially transitioned from its former gas-powered heating system to a sustainable, low-carbon District Heat Network.

This marks a significant milestone in Housing 21’s journey towards a greener future and was showcased during a recent visit to the Gateshead Energy Centre by Housing 21 representatives.

Marigold Court operated its own gas-powered plant room for several years, to supply heating and hot water to the building. With the innovative update, Marigold Court has completely phased out gas consumption and now benefits from a cutting-edge District Heat Network that relies on a range of low-carbon technologies to provide heating. This sustainable shift means that the building is no longer burning gas, drastically reducing its carbon footprint.

Dean Doerr Property Improvement Manager at Housing 21, said: "This project is an excellent example of how we can achieve net zero emissions in a way that is cost-effective and minimally disruptive for residents.

"Typically, such transitions come with high costs, significant disruption to residents, and the need for residents to learn how to operate new heating systems. However, thanks to the District Heat Network, we’ve delivered all the environmental benefits without any of the usual challenges. This is truly a win-win for both the environment and the community."

The Gateshead Energy Centre is a hub for sustainable energy solutions, providing efficient and eco-friendly heating to buildings across the region through cutting edge District Heat Networks. The Centre is committed to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability through innovative, low-carbon technologies.

The District Heat Network powering Marigold Court uses a variety of low-carbon technologies, ensuring that the building's heating needs are met in a way that aligns with broader sustainability goals. This move also complements efforts to create more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly housing across the region.

Residents at Marigold Court enjoy the benefits of this innovative system, experiencing reliable, efficient heating and hot water without the need to adjust to unfamiliar systems or bear the cost of a major retrofit. Heat networks are a major part of the UK’s plan to reach net zero and when they are done well, they are a fantastic solution especially for hard-to-treat properties.

This commitment to creating a more sustainable and energy-efficient future for all residents, demonstrating that the transition to net zero can be both practical and beneficial.
