Preparations are in full swing as Lee, a veteran living at Housing 21’s specialist scheme, The Rise in Plymouth, gears up to swim 80 lengths to mark VE Day’s 80th anniversary. Taking place on Thursday, 8 May, the event will see Lee swimming an impressive 2,000 meters in support of Blind Veterans UK.
Driven by his passion for the cause, Lee chose to undertake this sponsored swim for a charity close to his heart. Having left the armed forces in 1991 and suddenly losing his eyesight more recently, Lee experienced firsthand the life changing support provided by Blind Veterans UK, especially after moving into the Extra Care scheme. With this challenge, he aims to raise vital funds for the organisation and shine a spotlight on the incredible work it does.

Lee said, “I have the will and determination to complete the swim because of the support I’ve received from Blind Veterans UK.”
Despite facing challenges, Lee is dedicated to his training. He can only make it to the pool once a week due to his fear of going alone. To stay on track, he’s incorporating gym workouts into his routine, attending spin classes and skipping at home. Lee commented: “I know I can’t walk or swim in a straight line, but I’m trying!”
When asked about his fundraising goals, Lee explained that his original target of £80 was quickly surpassed in just one day. Now, he’s playfully “chasing Captain Tom,” though he’s realistically aiming to raise £500.
Geri, Lee’s neighbour at the Rise commented on his inspirational journey: “I know the purpose of his swim-a-thon is not for his own personal notoriety but to show his respect and gratitude to Blind Veterans UK for all they have done and continue to do for him, and also raise awareness for this very worthy cause.”
Lee’s fundraising is connected to Housing 21’s origins within the Royal British Legion. Established in 1964, the organisation was originally formed to provide housing for older and disabled ex-servicemen and widows. In 2024, Housing 21 further strengthened its commitment to the Armed Forces community by signing the Armed Forces Covenant pledge, underscoring its ongoing support for those who have served.
The Rise is a specialist development for people with visual impairment. It provides self-contained apartments with care services based on-site and a range of communal facilities.
